Born Nathaniel Cole on 17th March 1919, with his smooth baritone voice and flowing piano style, he recorded over one hundred songs that became hits on the American pop charts. His trio was the model for the small jazz ensembles that followed. He also acted in films, performed on Broadway, and was the first black man to host an American television series.
